Malshej Ghat stretch closed after road subsidence; traffic diverted

The left carriageway of the Kalyan-Ahilyanagar section of NH 61 near Karanjale village in Malshej ghat was closed to heavy vehicle traffic after road subsidence.

A 50–100 metre stretch of the newly-constructed concrete road collapsed when the subgrade gave way, caused by a weakened gabion retaining wall foundation.

Authorities attributed the destabilization to hill-cutting and land-levelling on an adjoining private agricultural plot, worsened by monsoon rains washing away soil.

Traffic was diverted to alternate routes; heavy vehicles were stopped from traveling toward Kalyan from Alephata and Ahilyanagar to prevent further risk.
