Canadian man jailed 18 months due to police error
Brandon Klayme of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia was acquitted by the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal after 18 months in prison for child luring and child pornography.
The wrongful conviction stemmed from a police request that omitted an underscore from a Kik username "fus__ro_dah", leading to Klayme's account "fus_ro_dah".
The case began with a complaint in Wisconsin about a 12-year-old girl in contact with an adult on Kik; the correct username would have pointed to a different person in California.
Halifax Regional Police found no evidence linking Klayme to the offences, yet he was convicted in 2023 and sentenced in January 2024.
The appeal court ruled Klayme was "factually innocent" and quashed his conviction, vacating his sentence.
