Trump wants Infantino as next UN secretary-general: Report

US President Donald Trump reportedly supports FIFA president Gianni Infantino for the UN secretary-general position.

Trump believes Infantino has the ability to unite people globally, citing his role in organizing the FIFA World Cup.

Infantino previously presented Trump with FIFA's inaugural Peace Prize, and the two grew closer during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

During the World Cup final, Trump and Infantino faced boos from the crowd, and Trump appeared to awkwardly join Spain's trophy celebration.

To become UN secretary-general, a candidate needs backing from the UN Security Council (including veto power from permanent members) and approval from the General Assembly.
