Scientists traced 1997 Pacific 'Bloop' to Antarctic icequakes

In 1997, NOAA's hydrophones in the South Pacific detected a powerful low-frequency sound named 'the Bloop'.

The sound was strong enough to be picked up by sensors thousands of miles apart.

Initially, it was speculated to be from a giant sea creature, but later research traced its origin.

Scientists determined the Bloop was caused by icequakes in Antarctica, not a creature.
