2,000-year-old Egyptian hat restored at museum

A 2,000-year-old Egyptian hat from the Roman period, made of felted wool, was restored and is now on display at Bolton Museum for the first time.

The hat likely belonged to someone connected with the Roman military, designed to withstand Egypt's sun, heat, and sand, and dates to around 200 CE.

It was donated to Bolton's collection in 1911 by archaeologist Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie and remained in storage for over a century.

Conservation was performed by textile specialist Jacqui Hyman, and the hat is now the most complete and best-preserved of three known examples.
