Samudra Manthan explained: How India’s offshore oil & gas exploration scheme can be a game-changer

Samudra Manthan – National Offshore Exploration Scheme, approved by the Union Cabinet, aims to unlock India's offshore oil and gas potential through seismic surveys, deepwater exploration, and scientific drilling.

The scheme is expected to add over 600 Million Metric Tons of Oil Equivalent (MMTOE) of reserves and will be implemented through FY 2030-31.

Key aspects include large-scale seismic data acquisition, accelerated deepwater drilling, and development of common offshore infrastructure.

It follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's August 2025 announcement of the National Deep Water Exploration Mission.

The scheme is a strategic move to reduce India's nearly 90% dependence on oil imports.
