Google’s search empire faces $1 billion EU fine over abuse of market power

The European Union fined Google 890 million euros (about $1 billion) for violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

EU regulators said Google abused its search dominance by ranking its own services like Google Shopping, travel, and translation above rivals.

Google Play Store rules were found to block app developers from communicating directly with users or offering alternative payment options.

Google has 60 days to make rival services more visible in search results or face penalties of up to 5% of worldwide revenue.

Google's General Counsel Kent Walker called the decision "product degradation" and said it would worsen services for European users.
