Suspected hate crime: Three of family arrested for murder of woman law student in Aligarh

A 20-year-old law student, identified as Himanshi in the FIR, was allegedly killed by her family members in a suspected hate crime in Aligarh after she refused to end her friendship with a young man.
Those arrested include the woman’s father, Ávdesh Kumar, cousin, Anurag, and uncle, Jitendra; action was also taken against a juvenile relative.
The victim’s friend, Harshit Varshney, filed a complaint on July 25, alleging the family killed her on July 23 and cremated her body hastily to destroy evidence.
The case was registered at Gonda police station under sections including 103(1) (murder) and 238 (destruction of evidence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Harshit claimed the woman was assaulted by her family on March 15 after visiting his shop, and the police had previously mediated, allowing the family to take her into custody.
