BSE Sensex trades in green, Nifty50 slips in red: Why benchmark indices moved opposite?
On August 4, 2026, Nifty50 was down 0.64% at 24,615.00 while BSE Sensex was up 0.21% at 78,805.18 around 9:42 am.
National Stock Exchange (NSE) attributed the divergence to the newly introduced Closing Auction Session (CAS), not a market anomaly.
NSE said the index value is constant between 3:15 pm and 3:30 pm because there is no continuous order matching during the auction.
CAS and continuous trading have separate order books, allowing individual stock prices to differ, leading to different index values.
The Closing Auction Session was implemented under SEBI guidance to promote transparency and fair, robust price discovery in the cash market.
