Lok Sabha clears bill to increase number of Supreme Court judges, without debate
The Lok Sabha passed the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, without debate, increasing the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges from 33 to 37, excluding the Chief Justice of India.
The bill, introduced by Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, will now be sent to the Rajya Sabha for consideration.
The government argues the increase will enable the Supreme Court to function more efficiently and ensure speedy delivery of justice.
The sanctioned strength was last increased from 30 to 33 judges (excluding CJI) via the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Act, 2019.
