Panvel Court Sentences Dumper Driver To 7 Years In Jail For Attempting To Mow Down Police Personnel

Monish Ashok Gharat was sentenced to seven years' rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 1 lakh by the Additional District and Sessions Court in Panvel.
Gharat was convicted for attempting to murder police personnel, ramming the Ulwe police outpost, and endangering civilians during a violent rampage in Ulwe on May 31, 2023.
The rampage involved driving a Hyva dumper into Balaji Darshan Society, damaging cars, driving on the wrong side near Kharkopar railway station, and targeting motorcyclists and police beat marshals.
The conviction was based on testimony from 13 witnesses and other evidence presented by Public Prosecutor Y. S. Bhopi.
Senior Police Inspector Sanjeev Dhumal ordered two rounds of firing at the dumper's tyres to stop the vehicle, but the accused fled and was later arrested by Nhava Sheva police.
