Indian illegal immigration to US drops 69% from peak in 2023

Indian illegal immigration to the US dropped 69% from its FY2023 peak, with 20,614 encounters recorded through May FY2026.
US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data show a 99% decline in encounters at the southwestern border and 91% at the northern border.
The drop is attributed to the Trump administration’s tougher immigration policies, including refusal to grant asylum.
High costs of the trip deter repeat attempts, according to Gilbert Guerra of the Niskanen Center.
Encounters fell from 67,212 in October–May FY2023 to 20,614 in the same period FY2026.
