Mamdani Says New York Doesn’t Have Authority to Arrest Netanyahu
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the city lacks independent legal authority to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Mamdani urged the federal government to execute the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant for Netanyahu, who is accused of war crimes in Gaza.
The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in 2024; the U.S. does not recognize the ICC, unlike its 125 member countries.
President Trump said on Monday that Netanyahu would not be arrested in the U.S., after Mamdani earlier explored city authority to detain him.
Netanyahu is expected to visit New York in September for the United Nations General Assembly.
