UEFA members threaten FIFA World Cup boycott over restructuring
UEFA's 55 member associations unanimously backed a boycott of FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, if FIFA proceeds with a $20 billion commercial restructuring plan.
The emergency meeting chaired by UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin revealed 'absolute unity' among European football leaders in rejecting the proposal, which they view as an existential threat to the sport.
FIFA's proposal includes creating FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) to own and manage commercial rights, with sale of up to 20% minority stake valued at $20 billion, generating $4.2 billion for FIFA.
FIFA has offered each of its 211 member associations up to $40 million in funding if the proposal is approved before the September 19 vote deadline.
The FIFA member associations will vote on the proposal on September 19, with UEFA opposing it as an existential threat to football's governance.
