Trump to shut US missions in Canada, Japan, Caribbean amid retreat from global diplomacy: Report

President Donald Trump decided to shut down at least five diplomatic missions: the US embassy in St George's, Grenada; consulates in Medan, Indonesia; Winnipeg, Canada; and Nagoya, Japan; and the embassy branch office in Douala, Cameroon.

The Trump administration plans to close a total of up to 30 embassies and consulates worldwide as part of its 'America First' agenda.

The closures follow the administration's shutdown of dozens of bureaus last year and firing of hundreds of diplomats.

China has overtaken the US in diplomatic outposts, with 274 missions compared to 271 US missions by 2024, and is expected to fill the vacuum left by US withdrawal.

Critics say the downsizing is a blunder that could be irreversible, and the US withdrawal is set to benefit China's influence in regions like the Indo-Pacific and West Asia.
