Supreme Court reserves decision on Abu Salem plea for his release

The Supreme Court reserved judgment on Abu Salem's plea for release, claiming he has served 25 years in jail.

Salem was extradited from Portugal in 2005 after India gave a sovereign assurance that he would not be sentenced beyond 25 years.

The Court noted that Salem's incarceration began on November 11, 2005, meaning he has not completed 25 years as of 2026.

Salem's lawyer argued that his custody should count from September 18, 2002, when he was arrested in Portugal under an Interpol red notice.

The Centre argued the 25-year term runs from November 11, 2005, ending in November 2030.
