Two Assault Incidents In Mumbai Local Disabled Coaches Spark Safety Concerns

Disabled passenger Sanjay Ugale was assaulted by two non-disabled passengers in a reserved coach on a CSMT–Kalyan local after he told them the compartment was for disabled persons.

Ugale alleged that a constable at Diwa station failed to take action and instead left in a first-class coach.

In a separate incident, disabled passenger Anil Gangaonkar was assaulted at Kurla station by two colleagues of a non-disabled woman after she was asked to produce medical documents for her claim to travel in the disabled coach.

Activist Nitin Gaikwad submitted a complaint to railway authorities, stating reserved coaches have become 'centres of violence, encroachment and intimidation' for disabled passengers.

In a prior incident, disabled commuter Ramdayal Gupta was assaulted in a disabled coach, and after pulling the emergency chain in self-defence, a chain-pulling case was also registered against him.
