Parliament panel to meet social media platforms over online safety, privacy
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology will meet representatives of Meta, X, Snapchat, and Google on August 3, 2026, at 4 pm.
The meeting will discuss online safety, user privacy, and compliance with government rules, focusing on digital safety of women and children, and data protection for farmers, rural residents, labourers, and the general public.
Committee chairperson Nishikant Dubey said the platforms have been summoned to explain steps they are taking to safeguard user privacy and ensure compliance with government regulations.
The meeting follows Meta's temporary removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Facebook video on examination paper leaks, which Meta said was due to a technical error and later restored.
The video was PM Modi's first direct address to Gen Z during the CJP-led agitation over NEET-UG 2026 exam irregularities, in which he promised stronger anti-paper leak laws.
