At SGPGI Lucknow, father donates stem cells to save son with rare genetic disorder

in5points
SGPGIMS Lucknow performed a haplo-identical bone marrow transplant on a five-year-old boy with X-linked Adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD).
The boy's father donated stem cells for the transplant, which was conducted under the National Programme for Rare Diseases (NPRD).
HSCT (hematopoietic stem cell transplantation) is the only established treatment to stop X-ALD progression if done before permanent neurological damage.
This was SGPGIMS's first successful bone marrow transplant for X-ALD and the first such procedure in North India.
