Canada inaugurates US border bridge after cancelling joint ceremony

Canada inaugurated the Gordie Howe Bridge, connecting Detroit and Windsor, without a joint ceremony after cancelling it following new U.S. tariffs on Canadian products.

The 2.5-km bridge, fully financed by Canada at a cost of CAN$6.4 billion, was constructed since 2018.

U.S. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that Canada disinvited the U.S., claiming the U.S. now receives 50% of the bridge's profit due to changed deal terms.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney faced criticism over a proposed agreement giving the U.S. 50% of net revenue for 15 years, but later clarified revenue sharing applies only after Canada meets debt service obligations from a 2012 deal.

Trump had previously threatened to fully block the bridge, demanding it be at least half U.S.-owned.
