Unlike lower courts in UP, civil disputes dominate Allahabad HC

The Allahabad High Court and its Lucknow bench have a combined pendency of 12,28,799 cases as of July 23, 2026, with 6,28,954 civil and 5,99,845 criminal cases.

Civil matters constitute a slight majority of the backlog at the Allahabad High Court, contrasting sharply with Uttar Pradesh's subordinate courts where 84.1% of pending cases are criminal.

The Allahabad High Court accounts for nearly 19% of India's total high court pendency of 64,63,093 cases, making it the largest contributor to the national backlog.

At the Lucknow bench, civil litigation accounts for nearly 58% of the 2,30,552 pending cases, a distinctly higher proportion than at the Allahabad High Court.
