Every dowry harassment complaint serious, advising compromise may prove costly: Allahabad HC

The Allahabad High Court ruled that every dowry harassment complaint must be taken seriously and advising victims to compromise may prove costly.

The court said families have a moral and social responsibility to act promptly on women's complaints, as timely intervention could be life-saving.

The court upheld the conviction of Meena Devi's husband Dinesh Kumar and family members under sections 304B and 498A of the IPC and Section 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

The bench noted that Section 304B prescribes imprisonment of not less than seven years, which may extend to life imprisonment, but life imprisonment is not mandatory in every case.
