Bengaluru’s revives long-lost fire hydrant system

Bengaluru revived a fire hydrant system in Chickpet with a pilot network of nine underground hydrants on Rangaswamy Temple (RT) Street.
The hydrants allow firefighters to tap into a 350-metre dry pipeline, supplied by tankers, enabling immediate water access in narrow lanes.
The pilot was inaugurated by Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda and Gandhinagar MLA Dinesh Gundu Rao.
The system was introduced after major fires in Chickpet, including one in Kumbarpet in February 2026.
The hydrants aim to overcome access challenges for fire engines in congested commercial areas.
