TN man out on bail dies, kin allege police torture

year-old N Arunachalam, an employee of a Tasmac liquor outlet in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district, died on July 23.

He was detained on July 17 for possession of 120 liquor bottles and booked under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act.

Arunachalam collapsed inside the police lock-up after a medical checkup showed no injuries; he was released on station bail and sent for further treatment.

He died after a medical procedure; police deny allegations of custodial torture and released CCTV footage of the collapse.

His family alleges he was beaten by police; a case was registered based on his father’s complaint.
