Long hours hurting resident docs’ mental health, NMC tells SC

The National Medical Commission (NMC) told the Supreme Court that long working hours cause psychological distress and mental health issues for resident doctors.

NMC cited a task force report noting that demanding schedules, including 3-5 consecutive 24-hour duties, lead to physical and mental exhaustion.

NMC said it cannot enforce reasonable working hours, stating the matter falls under central and state health authorities.

The United Doctors Front filed a PIL, highlighting rising suicides among doctors, claiming 150 cases in five years.
