Former Army chief Gen VN Sharma passes away

Former Army chief General Vishwa Nath Sharma died on July 31, 2026, at age 96.

Sharma served as the Chief of the Army Staff from 1988 to 1990.

He was commissioned into the 16 Light Cavalry in June 1950 and was an alumnus of the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.

He was the younger brother of Major Som Nath Sharma, the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and the Indian Army expressed condolences.
