Punjab gharial rescued after straying into Rajasthan canal

  1. An adult gharial from Punjab was rescued on July 27 from the Mohangarh Minor of the Indira Gandhi Canal Project in Jaisalmer district, Rajasthan.

  2. The gharial, measuring over 12 feet, had strayed into the canal and was monitored for nearly five months before successful rescue.

  3. It was shifted to Mohali's Chhatbir Zoo for veterinary examination, health assessment, rehabilitation, and acclimatisation.

  4. The rescue was a joint operation by the forest departments of Rajasthan and Punjab, assisted by wildlife experts.

  5. The gharial is proposed to be released into the Beas River Conservation Reserve after rehabilitation.
