Over 56% of Mumbai’s slums in redevelopment pipeline

Over 56% of Mumbai's slum land (2,751 acres) is in the redevelopment pipeline, larger than the Mumbai Port Authority's total land bank (2,333 acres) and nearly as large as Navi Mumbai International Airport (2,866 acres).

The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) data shows 1,202 active redevelopment projects involving 321,858 hutments across Mumbai, covering 2,156 acres; 271 stalled projects cover 595 acres.

The 2,751 acres account for 56.35% of Mumbai's total 4,882 acres of slum land, with active projects alone covering 44.16% of slum land.

Pankaj Kapoor of Liases Foras notes a huge spurt in projects due to policy interventions, land scarcity, and premium locations, but warns stalled projects are higher than usual (20-25% historical average), indicating risks.

Stalled projects often involve sparse slum concentrations, which may discourage developers due to limited free-sale components.
