Ludwig Wittgenstein asked if an afterlife exists, what problem it actually solves, arguing that eternal existence does not address the search for meaning.

Wittgenstein developed these ideas in private notebooks while serving in the Austro-Hungarian army during World War One, on the Eastern and Italian Fronts.

The notes, written between 1914 and 1916, later influenced his book Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, published in 1921.

In proposition 6.4312 of the Tractatus, Wittgenstein rejected the belief that the soul's immortality provides moral certainty or purpose.

He argued that an endless extension of life 'would remain equally mysterious' as our present life, offering no guarantee of meaning.
