ITR filing deadline is over: Received a tax notice after July 31 due date? Here's how you should respond

The income tax department may send notices after ITR submission for mismatches in income details, unreported interest, capital gains, or incorrect deductions.
Taxpayers must respond to notices through the income tax e-filing portal within the specified deadline to avoid penalties, higher tax assessments, or prosecution in severe cases.
To respond, log in to the e-filing portal, go to Pending Actions > e-Proceedings, select the notice, and submit a response by agreeing or disagreeing.
Ensure the notice is genuine by checking the e-filing portal or verifying the PDF received via email or post before responding.
After submitting the response, note the transaction ID for future reference, and a confirmation message is displayed.
