Chandigarh MC to propose hike in waste management user-charges, fines in General House meet

Chandigarh Municipal Corporation will propose the draft SWM Bylaws, 2026 to the General House on Friday, following Supreme Court directions to align with Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.

Residential user charges will double for most categories, e.g., houses up to 2 marla from ₹50 to ₹100, above 2 to 10 marla from ₹100 to ₹200, and above 2 kanal from ₹350 to ₹700.

The draft mandates segregation of waste into four streams: wet, dry, domestic hazardous, and sanitary, with color-coded bins and prohibition of mixing at any stage.

Street vendors' monthly user charge increases from ₹50 to ₹100.

Bulk waste generators must segregate horticulture and construction waste separately and process biodegradable waste on-site where required.
