Spain builds 1,600-foot sea barrier after Ceuta migrant crisis leaves 67 dead

Spain is installing a 500-meter floating pneumatic barrier on the sea border between Ceuta and Morocco after 50,000-60,000 migrants breached the frontier.

The barrier sits 30-70 cm above water and drops 1 meter below surface, reinforced by anchored buoys from the Spanish Navy, with a channel for Guardia Civil patrols.

The Ceuta crisis death toll reached 67, including drownings and a stampede at the breakwater.

Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez criticized EU leaders' reactions, while Italy's Giorgia Meloni threatened to suspend Schengen participation and reimposed border controls on Spain arrivals.

Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska defended Morocco and said most migrants have returned.
