UN says Sudan's El-Obeid 'massive disaster'

UNICEF's Sudan chief Sheldon Yett called the conflict in El-Obeid a 'massive disaster that keeps getting worse'.

UNICEF reported spikes in malnutrition, gender-based violence, and rape in El-Obeid, with children being recruited by militia groups.

Rising prices of basic necessities and limited access to clean water are causing the uptick in malnutrition, said Yett.

The war between Sudan's regular army and the Rapid Support Forces, ongoing since April 2023, has killed tens of thousands and displaced over 11 million.

Yett warned of a cholera outbreak risk in Kordofan due to large displacements and criticized the lack of humanitarian aid and attention to the crisis.
