Rising sea levels are making coastal flooding more common around the world; study finds

Coastal flooding that was once considered unusual is becoming more frequent globally due to rising sea levels.

A study published in Nature found human-driven sea-level rise has quadrupled the frequency of extreme coastal sea-level events since 1900.

Extreme sea-level events now occur four times more often than a century ago, making a previously one-in-100-year event much more common.

Human-caused warming has amplified the impact of tides and storms, though natural variations still influence local flood risk.

The findings point to a long-term shift, indicating that even ordinary tides and storms can now produce impacts that previously required exceptional conditions.
