Bengal to introduce smart meters for all consumers in phases: CM Adhikari

West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari announced pre-paid smart meters for all electricity consumers in phases.

Four private companies received contracts to install and maintain smart meters.

Kolkata remains outside the smart meter system because CESC, owned by the Goenka group, supplies power to the city and surrounding areas.

The previous TMC government introduced smart meters in October 2024, but protests over inflated bills led to a halt in June 2025, allowing reversion to traditional meters.

Adhikari launched a mobile app to report power theft and urged a slow, convincing approach to smart meter adoption.
