A July 2026 earthquake damaged Kumamoto Castle, a 400-year-old fortress in Kumamoto City, Japan.
The castle, built by samurai Katō Kiyomasa from 1601 to 1607, is known for its curved stone walls called musha-gaeshi that were designed to deflect attackers.
The 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes (magnitudes 6.5 and 7.3) caused extensive damage to all 33 major buildings, leading to one of Japan's largest restoration projects.
The castle survived the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877 but was mostly destroyed by fire during that conflict.
