Teen's routine fishing trip ends with a South Dakota record that had stood since 1970

Jack Backman of Harrisburg, South Dakota, caught a one-pound pumpkinseed in Wall Lake on June 18, breaking a state record that had stood since 1970.

Backman was fishing for walleye with friend Garrett Johnson and initially thought he had hooked a crappie before realizing the fish was a pumpkinseed.

The catch was officially weighed on a certified scale and accepted by the state, making Backman the new South Dakota record holder.

The previous state record for a pumpkinseed was 12 ounces, and the new record is one pound.
