Trekking policy gives livelihood push for tribals

Karnataka's forest department introduced a trekking policy requiring certified guides on all approved trekking routes.

More than 60 Malekudiya tribe members have been certified as nature guides on the Nethravathi Peak trail, and over 350 local residents across Karkala, Belthangady, Sringeri, and villages near Kudremukh forests are employed as guides.

Since April 2026, every group of ten trekkers must have one guide, daily visitor numbers are capped at 300 on major trails, and bookings are made through the department's online portal.

Manjunath Malekudiya, a 50-year-old from Malavanthige village, earns ₹15,000-₹20,000 per month during the trek season, using his traditional knowledge to guide visitors.
