Women’s reservation a right deferred too long: Subhashini Ali

Subhashini Ali called women's reservation a standalone right that should have been fulfilled decades ago, noting drafts were prepared as early as 1996 but stalled due to entrenched patriarchy.

Despite unanimous parliamentary approval in 2023, the measure remains unimplemented due to new conditions, according to Ali.

Ali said women hold only 74 seats in the Lok Sabha, which would rise to 180 under a 33% quota, while state assemblies have below 10% female representation.

Ali criticized the government's 'Nari Shakti Vandan' term as flattery that fails to provide concrete rights, alleging the administration operates under a patriarchal mindset loyal to the Manusmriti.

The All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) held a seminar on women's reservation and student issues, and formed a human chain to protest police violence against students during the July 20 'Chalo Sansad' march.
