75k overspeeding challans in 5 months, Mohali undeterred

Mohali traffic police issued 75,152 overspeeding challans between January 1 and May 31, the highest among 2,78,940 total challans.

In a recent incident, a speeding Thar hit a motorcycle near IISER traffic lights in Mohali, killing a 55-year-old woman and injuring her son and grandson.

Road safety expert Harpreet Singh said enforcement alone is insufficient and called for complementing policing with scientific measures.

Helmet violations, which topped 2025 with nearly 3.9 lakh challans, dropped to second place in 2026 with 63,899 driver and 49,679 pillion violations.
