Scientists claim the shrinking Pacific Ocean will lead to the formation of a new supercontinent 'Amasia'

The Pacific Ocean covers more than 155 million square kilometers, larger than all land areas combined.

The Pacific is shrinking due to subduction zones around its rim (the Ring of Fire) consuming seafloor faster than new crust forms.

The Pacific was formed about 200-250 million years ago when the supercontinent Pangaea broke apart.

Scientists estimate that in 200 to 300 million years, the Pacific may close completely.

The closure would pull continents together to form a new supercontinent called 'Amasia'.
