128 new Saturn moons discovered: Scientists say they are fragments of ancient worlds

new irregular moons of Saturn were discovered using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope between 2019 and 2021, confirmed by the International Astronomical Union in March 2025.

The moons are thought to be fragments from a recent major collision within Saturn's moon system, offering clues about Saturn's violent past.

Lead researcher Dr Edward Ashton of Academia Sinica led the team from Taiwan, Canada, the US, and France; he predicts Jupiter will not surpass Saturn's moon count.

The study was published by the American Astronomical Society, shedding light on the evolution of Saturn's irregular satellite population over billions of years.
