SC upholds Chandigarh’s decision of ban on apartmentalisation across city

The Supreme Court upheld the Chandigarh administration's ban on converting residential buildings into floor-wise apartments across the city.

The ban, effective from February 10, 2023, prohibits sale of property shares to anyone outside the owner's family.

The decision extends the restriction beyond heritage sectors to southern sectors as well.

The ban originated from a 2023 Supreme Court judgment protecting the heritage status of Le Corbusier's sectors.

The Chandigarh Heritage Conservation Committee recommended the ban, leading to the UT notification.
