Andy Burnham was declared Labour Party leader on July 18, 2026, and will become UK prime minister on July 20.
Burnham, former mayor of Greater Manchester, was the only contender and secured nominations from 379 of 403 Labour lawmakers.
In his first speech as leader, Burnham promised to deliver hope and good growth by transferring power from central government to local leaders.
Keir Starmer will remain prime minister until July 20, when he resigns to King Charles III.
