The Washington Commanders fired tight ends coach Ben Steele days before training camp, with no public explanation from the team.

Ben Steele was arrested on June 7 in Virginia on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, and faces additional charges for refusing a blood or breath test and for obstructing or resisting an officer.

Steele informed the team of the arrest; Washington placed him on leave and notified the NFL, and offensive assistant Wes Welker worked with tight ends during minicamp.

Head coach Dan Quinn is expected to name Steele's replacement on Tuesday.

Steele joined the Commanders after three years as tight ends coach for the Arizona Cardinals, where he helped Trey McBride set a positional record with 126 receptions in 2025.
