TMC's Madan Mitra joins rebel camp, Mamata says people entering 'BJP's washing machine' for safety

Trinamool Congress leader Madan Mitra joined the rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee on July 15, 2026.

Mitra resigned from his posts as national working committee member, chief whip, and general secretary of Mamata Banerjee's TMC.

The rebel faction now has 60 of TMC's original 80 lawmakers, while Mamata's faction has 20.

Mamata Banerjee called the rebels traitors and said they were using Abhishek Banerjee as an excuse.

Mitra's defection came after the Enforcement Directorate sent summons to his wife and two sons, though he denied a link.
