WR to rebuild Bandra-Khar flyover in half the time to fast-track sixth rail line

Western Railway will demolish and rebuild the 45-year-old Bandra-Khar rail bridge in 45 days, half the usual 90 days, to make way for the Mumbai Central-Borivali sixth rail line.

The 45-day mega block will significantly affect Harbour Line services, with trains between Bandra and Goregaon likely suspended or curtailed, and several services terminating at Bandra.

The project uses precast construction technology to complete demolition, reconstruction, and commissioning of a rail line within a single mega block.

The current flyover carries Harbour Line trains between CSMT/Panvel and Goregaon and obstructs the sixth line construction; the Khar Road-Borivali section is already commissioned, but Mumbai Central-Khar Road faces challenges.

Land acquisition for the project is almost complete; only a small government plot at Lower Parel awaits statutory approvals.
