Indians account for 57% of Canada’s fall in new permanent residents

Canada's new permanent residents fell 12.5% in the first five months of 2025 compared to 2024, from 168,800 to 147,260.

Indians accounted for 57% of the decline, with their numbers dropping from 49,115 to 36,910, a reduction of nearly 25%.

The overall decline in new permanent residents from January to May 2025 was 21,540, of which Indians made up over 57%.

IRCC data shows new permanent immigrants to Canada fell 19% year-over-year in 2025, from 483,655 in 2024 to 393,530.

Indian permanent resident admissions dropped from 127,375 in 2024 to 98,770 in 2025, continuing a decline from a 2023 peak of 139,790.
