A 35-year-old man, his wife (30), and their two sons under age five were found dead on railway tracks at Singarayakonda railway station in Andhra Pradesh's Prakasam district.
The man had been named the prime accused in the murder of his brother-in-law, Nadavati Srihari, an agriculture officer in Buchireddypalem mandal.
Srihari's death on June 15 was initially believed natural, but a complaint by his wife through the Public Grievance Redressal System led to a fresh investigation.
Police alleged the accused injected Srihari with a lethal substance used to euthanize dogs while returning from Penchalakona temple, then claimed he died of a heart attack and cremated the body.
