Antarctica's Concordia Station hit minus 119.4°F, its coldest temperature in 16 years

Concordia Research Station in Antarctica recorded minus 119.4°F (minus 84.1°C) on July 18, its coldest temperature in 16 years.

The station is jointly operated by France and Italy, located on the East Antarctic Plateau at about 3,200 meters elevation.

The extreme cold resulted from polar winter, high elevation, and a persistent high-pressure system causing clear skies and light winds.

The reading was the lowest temperature officially reported anywhere on Earth since 2012, but did not exceed the all-time record of minus 128.6°F at Vostok Station in 1983.
